He wrote his second novel Under the Volcano in 1948 which some consider one of the finest novels of the 20th century. In 1940, he married actress Margerie Bonner and they relocated to British Columbia where he enjoyed a happy life. He published his first novel Ultramarine in 1933. He paid scant attention to his education but found more satisfaction in writing. Born in England, his early life was marred by depression and alcoholism.
